White Christmas - a history of retro schmaltz
White Christmas is based on the 1954 musical film that used Irving Berlin's schmaltzy tunes and words and famously starred dancing duo, Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. A musical version was first staged in San Francisco in 2004 and had a short seasonal run on Broadway before touring the UK. David Ives and Paul Blake kept the sentimental theme of the film alive by using seventeen of Berlin's songs when they wrote the stage book for the latest version of the musical. The retro choreography was provided by Broadway's Randy Skinner who takes on the role of director for the show's US tour.
White Christmas directed by Morgan Young opened at the West End's Dominion Theatre in November 2014 for a holiday run and featured Aled Jones singing his hit song "Walking in the Air". A 17-piece orchestra accompanied the cast as they sang old favourites like "Count Your Blessings", "How Deep is the Ocean" and the iconic "White Christmas". Morgan Young kept the cosy theme going by using visible scene changes during songs and covering the audience with a flurry of snow in the finale. Tom Chambers of soap opera fame played the second half of the duo in White Christmas and showcased a hidden talent with his seven-minute tap marathon.
White Christmas - a flurry of seasonal fun
White Christmas tells the story of ex-army mates Bob Wallace and Phil Davis as seeking romance they follow two sisters heading to Vermont to put on a Christmas show. The show just happens to be at the ski lodge owned by Bob and Phil's former army general but a lack of snow is causing the hotel to sink into oblivion. In an effort to drum up trade a snow concert is conceived and, in the true spirit of show business, it takes just a few days to stage the show in a barn and bring hotel guests flocking back. A warm glow is created when snow arrives in time for the finale. After its West End success, the musical headed off for seasonal tours in the United States so sort out your Christmas entertainment now with White Christmas tickets from StubHub.
