A pioneer of women's tennis
The Volvo Cars Tennis Open holds a special place in tennis fans' hearts not just because it is such a fiercely fought event but also because of its unique historic associations. Originally christened the Family Circle Cup, the tournament began in 1973. Determined to raise the profile of women's tennis, it offered $100,000 in prize money, an unprecedented sum during that era. It was also the first ladies' tournament to be broadcast all around America on network television. In 2001, the event moved from its base in Hilton Head, South Carolina to a new, state of the art facility on leafy Daniel Island in the city of Charleston. After more that 40 years at the forefront of the women's game, in 2015 the tournament struck a new sponsorship deal which helped to secure its future for the next generation of female tennis players.
Past champions
During its early years, Chris Evert dominated the tournament. Between 1974 and 1985, this great American player won the title eight times, a feat that has yet to be matched. Her arch rival Martina Navratilova held up the trophy on four occasions. So too did the athletic German Steffi Graf, whose power strokes decimated the opposition in the late '80s and early '90s. Since then, no individual player has held sway for any length of time, but winning the title has always been a sure sign of who's in form, with the likes of Jelena Jankovic, Samantha Stosur and Angelique Kerber joining the roll call of champions.
