From "Life Without Rory" to The Games in London
Frontman Alex Trimble, lead guitarist Sam Halliday and bassist Kevin Baird first began performing under the guise of Life Without Rory in their mid-teens, and later dropped out of university to pursue their musical ambitions. After changing their moniker to Two Door Cinema Club, the trio dropped their debut EP, "Four Words to Stand On", in 2008 and two years later their first studio effort, the Phillipe Zdar-produced "Tourist History", became something of a sleeper hit. 2012 sophomore "Beacon" subsequently topped the charts in their homeland and reached the Top 20 in the States, while its accompanying tour was documented on the four-part series "What We See". The band’s profile received a major boost when Trimble performed at the opening ceremony of The Games in London, while 2013 EP "Changing of the Seasons" and 2016’s third LP, "Gameshow", continued their winning streak. In 2019 the three-piece invited Zimbabwean outfit Mokoomba and Los Angeles-based rapper Open Mike Eagle to appear on their fourth album, "False Alarm". It’s little wonder that Two Door Cinema Club have become a festival favourite since emerging on the scene in the early 2010s, regularly appearing at the top of the bill at events such as Glastonbury Festival, Benicàssim and Lollapalooza. Their spiky indie-pop sound, which has also graced the soundtracks of everything from "Teen Wolf" and "My Kitchen Rules" to "The Edge of Seventeen" and "Now You See Me", is tailor-made for both bouncing and singing along to on a hot summer’s day. But the band’s uplifting back catalogue works just as well in a darker and more intimate setting as Trimble and co. power their way through both early hits such as "Something Good Can Work", "I Can Talk" and "What You Know" and later indie-disco anthems including "Changing of the Seasons", "Are We Ready (Wreck?)" and "Dirty Air". If you haven’t yet caught one of Ireland’s biggest alternative outfits in their element, check out the various Two Door Cinema Club tickets now on offer through StubHub.
