Tokyo Games in summer 2021: Handball – a fan favourite for over 40 years

Denmark and Russia reigning champions
Handball made a one-off appearance as an outdoor event at the Berlin Games in 1936, while the indoor version also graced Helsinki in 1952 as a demonstration sport. It was initially only accepted in a competitive form in the men’s game in Munich in 1972, with women allowed to take part in Montreal four years later. Germany is the most successful nation in the men’s sport with a total of five medals, but their tally of two golds is also matched by France, Soviet Union, Croatia, and Yugoslavia. On the women’s side, Denmark top the all-time medal table with three golds, just ahead of South Korea and Norway. Denmark are the reigning champions in the men’s game having defeated France at Rio in 2016, while France also finished as a runner-up in the women’s game after losing in the final to Russia. Staged at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium
All the handball matches at the Games in Tokyo will take place at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium, kicking off on July 25 with the men’s group stages and concluding on August 9 with the women’s final and bronze medal matches. Alongside the host nation of Japan, Denmark, Argentina, Bahrain, Spain and Egypt have already booked their place in the men’s game, with South Korea, Angola, France, Brazil and the Netherlands all doing the same in the women’s. The remaining qualifiers will be settled via the IHF Qualification Tournaments, which take place across March and April. Spain are tipped to pick up their first ever gold medal in the men’s game, but they will face stiff competition from Croatia and Norway. In the women’s version, the Netherlands are hot favourites to win their first ever medal in the sport, although the Spaniards also fancy their chances at making it two out of two.
