Ever present at the Games since 1916
Boxing was introduced into the Games in 1904, and apart from a break eight years later due to host nation Sweden’s ban, it has been a part of the roster ever since. Until 2008, only men competed in the event across various categories including flyweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight. But at the Games in London 2012, three women’s categories were added to the program: flyweight, lightweight and middleweight. The United States has been, by far and away, the most successful boxing nation over the past century, winning an astonishing 114 medals (50 of them gold), with Cuba, Great Britain and the Soviet Union all making the podium on at least 50 occasions too. Reigning champions have included Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov in the men’s light flyweight, Russia’s Evgeny Tishchenko in the men’s heavyweight, France’s Tony Yoka in the men’s super heavyweight and Team USA’s Claressa Shields in the women’s middleweight. Two new women’s categories, two fewer men’s
Several changes have been made to the weight categories for Tokyo. Two have been removed from the men’s program, light flyweight and light welterweight, while two have been added to the women’s, welterweight and featherweight. The boxing part of the Games kicks off at the indoor sporting arena Ryōgoku Kokugikan on July 25 with the first rounds of the men’s welterweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight and the women’s featherweight, and concludes at the same venue on August 9 with no fewer than four different finals. Those expected to be in the running for medals include Cuba’s Andy Cruz Gomez, Kazakhstan’s Bekzad Nurdauletov and Uzbekistan’s Bakhodir Jalolov in the men’s and the Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio, Brazil’s Beatriz Ferreira and Turkey’s Busenaz Sürmeneli in the women’s.
