The King and I - an exotic history
The King and I was the fifth musical produced by the dream team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. The musical was based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens who was employed as governess to King Mongkut of Siam's children. Premiering at Broadway's St James Theatre in March 1951, the musical originally ran for nearly three years. The young Yul Brynner played the part of King Mongkut with gusto and panache, going on to reprise his role on stages around the world until his untimely death thirty years later. He recreated the role an astounding 4,625 times! The original Anna was the Hollywood star, Gertrude Lawrence.
The King and I is set in the colourful and dramatic world of Bangkok in the 1860s. Still Siam, the country is ruled by an autocratic king. He brings the young widow Anna Leonowens to court to educate his many children and introduce his many wives to Western etiquette. Anna and the King enter a tempestuous and unconventional yet poignant relationship. In the process, Anna and her son Louis win the hearts of all they meet and soften the harshness of the king's rule. The King and I ends with a touching deathbed scene and Anna's sad departure from the country.
The King and I - dancing its way around the world
The King and I is truly a musical that brings all aspects of the genre together - stunning sets, gorgeous costumes, adorable children, strong leads and, of course, tender love stories supported by memorable songs. Reprised at the London Palladium in 1976 The King and I, still starring Yul Brynner, achieved the largest advance sale in British history. Brynner stated, "It is not a play, it is a happening". Recent revivals have seen a stronger emphasis placed on a more authentic recreation of the mystery and menace of the Siamese court.
