Steven Wright - comedy beginnings and breakthrough
Wright began performing in stand-up clubs in his local Cambridge in the late 1970s and 1980s, eventually earning the attentions of television executives. He was eventually booked on The Tonight Show, then hosted by Jimmy Carson. His appearance proved to be so successful that he was invited back to perform the following week. In 1985, Wright released his first comedy album, I Have a Pony. The album was nominated for Best Comedy Album at the Grammy Awards and the success of the recording led to the commissioning of a HBO special. The Steven Wright Special proved to be one of the most successful ventures for HBO and the set continues to be one of Wright's most popular.
A further special followed in 1990, Wicker Chairs and Gravity, with Wright's comic stylings continuing to prove incredibly popular with audiences. At this point, Wright moved away from television work bar the occasional performance on talk shows and put a focus on directing and writing. He finally returned to the world of stand-up with the release of his belated stand-up special, When the Leaves Blow Away, released on DVD in 2007.
