Playing in history’s first ever selection game against Portugal in the mid thirties, Spain’s home-court advantage (played in Madrid) saw the team qualify for the first ever EuroBasket! Although due to financial reasons Spain almost never competed, relying on a last minute interjection from Spanish Basketball Federation President Gonzalo Aguire to secure the necessary funds. A lucky thing, as Spain came out the tournament with a respectable second place, losing out to Latvia in the final.
The Second World War left many countries in disrepair and with Spain coming under the new dictatorship of Franco, the forties and fifties remained a quiet time for Spain with the team only resurfacing in fifty-nine. The returning team were nowhere near the team they used to be, with Spain placing fifteenth in the EuroBasket. After years of hard work the Spanish selection worked its way up the table and by the seventies, Spain was winning silver and bronzes. By the eighties Spain had made a name for itself, when in eighty-six, Spain made their way to the US hosted Olympics Basketball Tournament final. Facing off against the USA, with a home-court advantage, Spain lost the match, however it became apparent to everyone that Spain was a force not to take likely. In two thousand and six Spain’s hard work finally paid off, when the team won the gold medal in the Basketball World Cup. The team have then gone on to win two EuroBasket tournaments, and three Mediterranean Games tournaments.
Spain’s rising success in Basketball can easily be explained when accounting for the popularity of the Endesa League (Liga Endesa), and Spain’s participation in the Euroleague. The way these players are developed, allows for improvement and growth, with teams in the Endesa League limited to how many American players they can have. This focus on home talent means that players get the chance to grow and has lead to the development of many of Spain’s greatest players, many of whom have been exported to the American NBA. These players include the likes of Rudy Fernandez who spent three years with the Portland Trailblazers, Juan Carlos who spent a year with the Memphis Grizzlies and host of others.
Much of Spain’s current international selection includes the Gasol brothers, Pau and Marc. Pau Gasol you may be familiar with, as Number Sixteen for the Los Angeles Lakers.
