From expansion team to champions
The Seattle Mariners were founded in 1977 as an expansion team. Named after their home city’s marine culture, the team won their first Major League Baseball AL West Division championship in 1995 and went on to repeat the feat in both 1997 and 2001, a year in which they broke the American League record for the highest number of single season victories. Mariners Hall of Famers include catcher Dan Wilson, pitcher Jamie Moyer and right fielder Jay Buhner as well as coaches Edgar Martinez and Lou Piniella. Goose Gossage, Pat Gillick and Rickey Henderson are just a few of the names who have also made it into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Nicknamed The M’s, the team has played in navy blue, silver and northwest green since 1993 and boast the Mariner Moose as their beloved mascot. From the Kingdome to T-Mobile Park
The multi-purpose Kingdome was the Seattle Mariners’ home from their 1977 inception until the turn of the century when they moved to T-Mobile Park. The 48,000-capacity venue, which features a retractable roof, has also hosted the Seattle Bowl, Wrestlemania XIX and various Washington Huskies games over the years. However, the atmosphere is at its most exciting when the Mariners take to the field and fans celebrate the numerous traditions. There’s the playing of The Kingsmen‘s "Louie Louie" as part of the seventh inning stretch and the cap and ball games and hydroplane races, which take place during the mid-innings. Designated areas, such as the King’s Court and Maple Grove, encourage the crowd to dress up, wave banners and cheer at the top of their lungs. The stadium has witnessed several historic milestones, including Ichiro Suzuki’s record-breaking single season hit and Philip Humber’s perfect game, and has also staged various playoff and MLB All-Star games.
