The Getaway: Slow beginnings
Set to release later this year, the album has actually been 5 years in the making, with Kiedis admitting that the band in total scrapped two albums worth of tracks, writing new ones while working with producer extraordinaire "Danger Mouse" (AKA Brian Burton) and Radiohead's very own mixer Nigel Godrich. In the same interview, the shift in direction and producer came about after Flea suffered an unfortunate snowboarding accident, breaking his arm. The problem was that the band already a huge number of songs, however without a producer to string them together, the band stood fairly lost. When Danger Mouse offered to help, the producer insisted the band start with something fresh. Despite initial resistance from the band, the Chili Peppers eventually decided to trust in the successful producer (whose previous credits include Gorillaz album Demon Day, both of the Black Keys albums, and is responsible for Beatles/Jay-Z Mashup album The Grey Album). Suffice to say with the lead single "Dark Necessities" having proved to be as successful as predicted, the album had critics and fans sighing with relief!
Receiving a Metacritic rating of 66 out of 100, The Getaway saw a high number of critics happy with the wait, and the general consensus of "different but good" is generally agreed. Suffice to say, Danger Mouse's influence has certainly played a big part in this opinion, as many critics have pointed out Danger Mouse's respect to Red Hot Chili Pepper's sound, and the mixing of Nigel Godrich complimenting the band perfectly! Top tracks to listen to from the album include "Go Robot", "Dreams of a Samurai" and, of course, "Dark Necessities"!
