A brief history of the National Hockey League
The National Hockey League is where 30 professional ice hockey clubs meet in order to fight for the winning title. It was first organized in 1917 in Quebec, Canada, and started with only four teams. The League has been binational since 1924, when the first American team Boston Bruins began playing, taking on Canada’s finest to prove America is just as capable on the hockey rink as their Canadian counterparts. As the NHL is widely considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, it is no surprise that it attracts highly skilled players from all over the world (and spectators, of course!).
Considering it’s been almost a hundred years since that first game, the structure of the league hasn’t actually changed all that much. Split into four divisions, two Western and two Eastern, (the Western split further into the Pacific and Central, the Eastern into Atlantic and Metropolitan), the NHL actually features a total of thirty different teams, hailing from all over North America!
The current NHL teams are:
Atlantic Divison: Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs.
Metropolitan Division: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals.
Central Division: Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, Winnipeg Jets.
Pacific Division: Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights.
