The first collegiate game in America took place on November 22, 1877, between New York University and Manhattan College and after periods of reorganisation the sport eventually fell under the guidance of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The NCAA holds lacrosse championships in three divisions for men's and women's lacrosse. At this point, the NCAA has just under 300 men's lacrosse programs and just under 400 women's lacrosse programs.
NCAA completely spans the nation with national conferences made up of teams based in every part of the country. In 2012, there were 61 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse teams, 46 Division II teams and 189 Division III teams. In the same year, there were 92 Division I women's lacrosse teams, 67 Division II teams, and 216 Division III teams. The scope of NCAA lacrosse is truly amazing and spectators have the unique opportunity to watch this sport at venues all over the nation.

Division I NCAA lacrosse represents the pinnacle of the game at the collegiate level and the sport's best teams battle it out every year for the title of champions. In the men's top division Syracuse lead the way with ten titles, while Johns Hopkins sit just behind with nine overall wins. More recently, Duke picked up back to back titles in 2013 and 2014 while Maryland broke a two final losing streak with a 2017 championship win. Competition in the league is as fierce as ever and looks set to continue over the next few seasons.
The women's top division is dominated by Maryland with the Terrapins picking up a record 13 titles, with three coming in the last four years, North Carolina picked up a title in 2016 to break the streak. The Northwestern Wildcats are second in the overall table with 7 titles, the last of which came in 2012.
