The National Collegiate Athletic Association regulates and administers collegiate level sport across the USA. The NCAA Division II Basketball Championship is an annual tournament for the smaller colleges and universities that make up the division. The men's competition originally dates back to 1957 and changed over time to its more modern day name and format in 1974, and the NCAA began administrating the women's Division II championship in 1982.
Division II spans the country with 64 teams playing in 22 different conferences, the teams take part in a regular season with the top conference sides eventually moving on to an elimination tournament. The eight best regional sides meet at the Division II finals tournament or "Elite Eight", with the victorious team taking home the championship title.

The Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers are the team to beat and lead the way with eight titles. The Evansville Purple Aces, in second, have five titles to their name. In recent years, a high level of competition has developed with a number of teams picking up titles. Florida Southern won in 2015, while the Augustana University Vikings triumphed in 2016, and the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats took home the 2017 title. CSU Bakersfield remain the last team to retain the trophy after their title wins in 1993 and 1994.
The women's division tells a similar story with Cal Poly Pomona the last back to back title winners with their victories in 2001 and 2002. North Dakota State set records with four consecutive wins and five titles in six years between 1991 and 1996. More recently, a number of different teams have picked up titles with Lubbock Christian defeating Alaska Anchorage in 2016 and the Ashland Eagles defeating the Virginia Union Panthers to take home the 2017 title.
