Major League Lacrosse history

The game of field lacrosse dates back as far as the 19th century in America, however, it took until 1999 for the modern incarnation of the sport to emerge. The first season of Major League Lacrosse took place in 2001 and consisted of six teams representing Baltimore, Boston, Bridgeport CT, Long Island, New Jersey, and Rochester. The league has expanded and contracted over the years but over the past few seasons has features nine teams and a 14 game season format.
MLL consists of a regular league schedule and at the end of the season the top four teams in the division move on to the playoffs and compete in a semifinal and final to determine the champions. The season runs from April to August and MLL gameplay rules differ slightly from traditional lacrosse rules with the MLL featuring a two-point goal line 15m from each goal and a 60-second shot clock. The quality on display remains the highest anywhere in the country and the games are also some of the most competitive in the nation.

MLL operates a nine-team league with the division dominated by teams from the east coast of America, this leads to an increased level of rivalry as teams jostle for geographic supremacy. The league includes teams such as the Chesapeake Bayhawks, Denver Outlaws, Florida Launch and New York Lizards. The Bayhawks are the team to beat with five championship wins with the New York Lizards playing catch up with three wins.
More recently the Denver Outlaws have set the pace with two championship wins in three years, winning the title in 2014 and 2016. Prior to that the Chesapeake Bayhawks won back to back titles in 2012 and 2013 to make it three titles in four years for the Maryland outfit.
