Mahalia – a singer to look out for
By the age of 14, Mahalia had already signed her very first R&B record deal – and she’s never looked back from there. She had started writing songs and learning to play the guitar when she was a young child, which stood her in good stead to launch her career early. Her first EP, "Headspace", was released in the middle of 2012. At the time, this then-teenage star shared her uncertainty about where she wanted her career to go – she realised that she would need to build on her style, introducing new and different sounds, to make her talent continually appealing to her fans. While she released another successful album, "Diary of Me", in 2016, the real breakthrough was made with "Sober", a single about the downsides of drunk-dialling an ex. This has been one of her most popular songs on download, with the combination of her voice and the addition of a synth base in place of her acoustic guitar utterly wowing fans. Mahalia, influenced by artists such as Erykah Badu and The Fugees, has taken a well-loved genre of music and made subtle changes to develop her own unique sound.
Mahalia – her support and influences
It’s been said of Mahalia that her songs tell a story, and this is especially true in her live shows. In performance she often shares with her audience the sometimes painful or embarrassing situations that have led her to creating the song she’s about to sing. While one of her earlier songs, "Marry Me", was one she performed at a school assembly to her boyfriend when she was 13, one of her most personal and insightful songs is "Proud of Me", which was released in 2019. The lyrics refer to her parents, who encouraged her dream, and she makes reference to the family, friends and teachers who have supported, influenced and been active role models in her journey.
