Beginnings and strives
Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, was born in 1988 in Detroit, Michigan. Ten years later, she moved with her family to Houston, Texas, where she eventually started to pursue music. By age 14, she had already been getting invitations to rap at a local community along with her group, Cornrow Clique, which she formed with her friends. It was also during these times when she adopted the name Lizzo, which was a derivation from her real name, Melissa. In 2011, she moved to Minnesota and took on various musical projects and collaborated with other artists. By 2013, Lizzo had already released her debut album, ‘Lizzobangers’, under the independent label Totally Gross National Product. In 2014, the album was released under British record label, Virgin Records. With four music videos from the album, ‘Lizzobangers’ garnered much positive acclaim from both fans and critics, gaining her more exposure and increasing her fanbase. In 2015, Lizzo dropped her second studio album, ‘Big Grrrl Small World’, under BGSW. Like ‘Lizzobangers’, the album was also met with positive response by the audience.
Commercial breakthrough
Lizzo’s commercial breakthrough came in 2016 after signing a record deal with major-label Atlantic Records. The same year, she also released her EP, ‘Coconut Oil’, under her new label. The EP proved to be a huge hit, peaking at 4th position in the US R&B Charts. The carrier single "Good as Hell" was certified platinum and gold by different groups, and even had a remixed version featuring Ariana Grande in 2019. Lizzo is a known advocate of body positivity and is bold to speak about body issues. Her focus on inclusion and diversity is further expressed and highlighted by her all plus-sized backup dancers. 2019 also bagged awards for Lizzo after winning Breakthrough Artist of the Year from Apple Music Awards, Best in Style from Rolling Stone’s International Music Awards, and Video of the Year and Album of the Year from Soul Train Music Awards.
