Jo Koy's route to stardom
Christened Joseph Glenn Herbert, his childhood nickname was Joy Koy which he kept as his stage name. Koy was born in Tacoma Washington in 1971 and credits his mother as the moving force behind his comedy. She encouraged him to take part in school performances and create routines at home. Moving to Las Vegas to help care for his grandmother he enrolled in the University of Nevada but dropped out to take his chance at stand-up in Las Vegas coffee houses and comedy clubs. His talent soon took him from these open mic nights to the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino where he appeared regularly in the Catch A Rising Star show. Next, Jo Koy made the bold move of renting the Huntridge Theatre and went from door to door selling tickets. Spotted here, he moved to Los Angeles to do two series of BET's Comic View.
His real big break came in 2005 with an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Here he received his first standing ovation, one of the few ever given on the show and a spur to continue his chosen career path. Named on the Daily Variety list of “10 Comics to Watch” Jo Koy's career took off with frequent TV appearances and stand-up tours that covered the States and Canada.
