IndyCar Series History
Unable to legally call themselves the Indy Car Series until 2003 for legal reasons due to issues with CART, Indy Racing has a history under various guises. In 1998-1999 it was known as the Pep Boys Indy Racing League and as the Indy Racing Northern Lights Series for the next two seasons. At the beginning of 2003, it was officially named the IndyCar Series and has kept that name since. Although the series name has changed slightly over the years due to sponsorship deals, it has always contained the IndyCar Series name within the title.
The IndyCar Series has a number of strict specifications and control for the engine and chassis of cars each season. Manufacturers of choice are changed every three seasons to keep competition between providers healthy. The chassis has developed significantly over the years, changing from different chassis types for street and oval tracks to a single, aero kit which works on all circuits throughout the season. The engines have also undergone significant changes since the beginning of IndyCar racing.
While the engine manufacturer has switched between manufactures several times, a new rule in 2012 allowed teams to choose between two different engine manufacturers, creating another level of competition and excitement for racing.
IndyCar Series Records
Since the launch of IndyCar Racing in 1996, only two drivers have won four championships, Dario Franchitti in 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2011, and Scott Dixon in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2015. Scott Dixon won his first title in his rookie year, although his previous experience in ChampCar Racing led to him not being considered a rookie. He also won his title in 2015 based on wins, having finished level on points with Juan Pablo Montoya. Dario Franchitti is the only driver to have won three consecutive titles, aving dominated IndyCar Series competition between 2009 and 2011.
Since 2010, IndyCar Series has also recognised a sub-set of championships alongside the main title. As the series is raced on two different course types, street, and oval,
there are titles awarded to the driver who performs best in each discipline at the end of each season. Will Power has won an astonishing five Road Course Trophies, while Juan Pablo Montoya has won the most Oval Trophies with two to his name.
