Houston’s very own
Houston, a city known for rocket ships and the best chicken and waffles, is also known for being the home to one of the most recognized teams in American professional baseball—the Houston Astros. Founded in 1962, the team was originally named the "Colt .45s." They played their first game in the National League the same year against the Chicago Cubs. They finished 8th in the league in their first season, and 9th the following year. In 1965, the team eventually changed their name to Houston Astros, in association with Houston’s significant role in the United States space program. With a new name and under new ownership, the Astros moved their home field to the Astrodome in 1965. They eventually moved to Enron Field Stadium in 2000. In 2005, the Astros won the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. It was also the year the Astros played their first World Series, in which they lost to the Chicago White Sox. In 2017, they won the World Series title after defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers. The same year, they won a pennant in both the American League and National League, defeating the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. This made the Astros the first team in Major League Baseball to have won a pennant in both leagues.
A team of awardees
Among the players from the Houston Astros inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame are Nellie Fox, Jeff Bagwell, Randy Johnson, Robin Joberts, and Don Sutton. The first mascot used by the Astros was Chester Charge, a Texas cavalry on a horse. Chester Charge was replaced in 1990 by Orbit, a green space creature. Orbit took a break in 2000 and returned in 2012, shortly before he was given a fresh new look in 2013 as part of the team’s branding.
