From The Last Emperor to The Amazing Spider-Man
Born in Frankfurt in 1957, Hans Zimmer’s early career included writing advertising jingles, collaborating with The Buggles and forming synth-pop group Helden. In the early 1980s he ventured into the film world, contributing to the soundtracks of "My Beautiful Launderette" and "Moonlighting", and winning an Oscar for his work with Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Byrne on "The Last Emperor". After racking up his first solo credit with "A World Apart", Zimmer composed music for "Rain Man", "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Thelma and Louise", and in 1995 won an Oscar for his "The Lion King" score. He later won a Grammy for "Crimson Tide", picked up further Oscar nods for "As Good As It Gets", "The Preacher’s Wife" and "The Thin Red Line", and by the turn of the century had become Hollywood’s go-to composer. "Gladiator", "Hannibal" and "The Da Vinci Code" were just a few of his ’00s successes, while in the following decade he became a franchise regular, providing music for various "Pirates of the Caribbean", "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Sherlock Holmes" films. He also developed a long-standing connection with Christopher Nolan, working on scores for "The Dark Knight Rises", "Interstellar", "Inception" and "Dunkirk". Not your ordinary film composer
Anything but your ordinary film composer, Hans Zimmer also ensures that his live shows are a break from the norm. Eschewing the typical sit-down-at-the-piano approach favoured by most of his peers, the German often prefers to perform while moving around the stage with an instrument in tow. And although his blend of classic orchestration and contemporary electronica is certainly powerful enough to speak for itself, Zimmer also enjoys regaling the audience with tales about his Hollywood experiences and musical inspirations. Fans should look forward to hearing goosebump-inducing musical numbers plucked from his four decades of film soundtrack work, with a full live orchestra and choir often in accompaniment. And although the epic symphonies from his comic-book, blockbuster and Disney soundtracks will no doubt provide the biggest response, Zimmer isn’t afraid to throw in a few left-field choices either, whether it’s a gentler piano-led number from "Driving Miss Daisy" or a rendition of The Buggles’ "Video Killed the Radio Star".
