Ed's comedy career began when he was at Strathclyde University when he began injecting jokes into his speeches as Student Union Vice President. He set up a comedy club called the Comedy Cellar in Glasgow and henceforth abandoned education for a life of giving out laughs. After that he moved to London and continued to gig for the next ten years, building up his rapidly established act. During this time he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, most notably winning the Perrier Comedy Award in 1998.
Since then Ed's career has gone in one direction only, his big UK tours have included Pedantic and Whimsical, Different Class, Crowd Pleaser and Spoiler Alert. He is also popular abroad, notably in Australia where he has also packed out venues. Ed is also an accomplished actor having starred in numerous programmes and films over the years including Father Ted, Reunited and The Cassidy's. He has also had many guest parts in panel shows such as Mock The Week, Have I got News for You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, The Unbelievable Truth, Blankety Blank and many more.
Ed's popular persona has also seen him on the sofa of Graham Norton six times as well as appearing on The One Show. In more recent years Ed has dedicated some of his time to mountain climbing challenges, one of which was televised in the BBC's Three Men go to Scotland.
