Demetri Martin Stand-up Career
Born to a Greek-American family in 1960's New York, Yale and Harvard educated Demetri turned to comedy in his twenties. In 2001 he got the break he deserved after an appearance on Comedy Central's Premium Blend. Just two years later he received international acclaim after winning a Perrier Award for his show If I.. which he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2004 If I... was turned into a BBC special and Martin was also granted his own Comedy Central Presents stand up special. This special showed the comedian's huge versatility and included observational stand-up along with subversive sketches and songs as well as appearances from friends and family. From 2005 Demetri Martin became a regular contributor on The Daily Show for many years, helping him become a household US name. His Comedy Central show Important Things with Demetri Martin ran for two seasons in 2009/10. Other accolades include a comedy music album called These Are Jokes and starring as the main character in the film Taking Woodstock as well as publishing a book called This is a Book in 2011. In 2015 a Netflix special was recorded,Demetri Martin Live (*at the time), which has become one of the streaming service's most popular stand-up specials. The comedian has also won accolades for his writing work, including a Writers Guild Award for his work on Late Night With Conan O’Brien and is also a keen artist and has compiled some of his funny drawings into another book, Point Your face At This.
