Dear Evan Hansen The Musical
From the songwriters of La La Land comes the intimate, touching, wryly comical pop musical that took Broadway by storm. Awkward teenager Evan Hansen's solitary existence is turned upside down when another of his classmates commits suicide. Due to a misunderstanding, the dead boy's parents believe he was their son's best friend and look to him to help explain their loss. Evan plays along and suddenly finds himself the centre of attention, but can he really carry on living a lie? Boasting heartfelt acoustic ballads “Waving Through a Window”, “You Will Be Found”, “Words Fail” and “Only Us”, Dear Evan Hansen is a contemporary tale about the need to connect. The making of Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen features music and lyrics by the songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, winners of the Jonathan Larson Award for theatre composers. The story, which draws on an incident from Pasek's teen years, was adapted into a script by Steven Levenson, otherwise known as a playwright and writer on the TV series Masters of Sex. The show premiered in Washington in 2015, moving to off-Broadway the following year. A Broadway transfer duly followed towards the end of 2016. Steering this story of a sensitive loner onto the stage was veteran director Michael Greif, who also helmed acclaimed productions of War Paint and Rent. He was ably assisted by award-winning scenic designer David Korins, whose versatile sets brilliantly evoked the worlds of high school and the Twittersphere. The production won three Drama League Awards and was nominated for nine Tonies.
Dear Evan Hansen: star performances
Many members of the cast carried on from the original Washington production onto Broadway. Key among these was Ben Platt. Previously best known for his appearances in the Pitch Perfect movies, this young actor was singled out for near-universal critical acclaim for his portrayal of the troubled yet charmingly self-aware title character. The original cast also included a fine turn from Laura Dreyfuss (Glee) as the girl Evan secretly loves. In 2017 Atlantic Records released a cast album that went on to be a top 20 hit.
