From an employee league to a top-tier team
Bayer 04 Leverkusen is one of the best teams in the Bundesliga, the top-tier German football league. The club was named after Friedrich Bayer and Co., a pharmaceutical company based in Leverkusen – the club was originally formed by employees of the company in 1904, after 171 employees co-signed a letter asking for the company’s support in their quest to start an athletic club. The club plays home matches at the aptly named BayArena. The club and their fans are proud of their roots, often referring to the club as "Werkself", which translates to "factory team", or "Pillendreher", which translates to "tablet twisters". All joking aside, the club has a deep sense of pride and paying homage to their origins is extremely important to them. Until the early 1930s, the club played in the third and fourth division of German football. But in 1936 they moved up to the second division and finally, in 1951, joined the top-tier league. Since that time many players have come and gone, but they have all proudly worn the red and black jersey and made an impact on the team and the sport. Players have hailed from around the world – fan favourites over the years have included Andreas Thom, Ulf Kirsten and Jens Melzig, all from East Germany; and Pavel Hapal, Paulo Sérgio and Rudi Völler.
