A club that’s reached all three European finals
Founded in 1926, ACF Fiorentina reached Serie A just five years later and won their first trophy, the Coppa Italia, in 1941. The club began to assert themselves as one of Italy’s premier football clubs in the post-war era, lifting the championship title in 1956 and reaching the European Cup Final a year later. In 1961 they added the Cup Winners’ Cup to their trophy cabinet and by the end of the decade had been crowned league champions once more. The club remained ever-present in Serie A throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and in 1990 finished runners-up in the Europa League Cup. This made them one of the few sides to have reached every major European competitive final. Denmark’s Brian Laudrup, Portugal’s Rui Costa and Argentina’s Gabriel Batitusta were just a few of the star names that graced the team during the following decade, as they continued to challenge for the silverware. Following various off-the-field problems, Fiorentina essentially started anew in 2002 but soon returned to the top flight, where they regularly qualified for Champions League football. The historic Stadio Artemio Franchi
ACF Fiorentina play their home matches at one of Italy’s most historic football venues, the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Officially opened with a match against Austria’s Rapid Vienna in 1931, the ground hosted several soccer matches just three years later and then again during Italia ’90, for which its capacity was increased to just over 47,000 and the athletics track was removed. Named after the club’s ex-president Artemio Franchi, the stadium has also staged several Italy internationals, rugby union matches and pop music concerts, with David Bowie, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen just some of the performers to have been welcomed there. However, the stadium is undoubtedly at its most atmospheric when ACF Fiorentina’s army of passionate fans – decked out in the club’s famous purple and white colours – start bringing the noise. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see one of Italy’s biggest football teams take to the field, but check out the various ACF Fiorentina tickets currently on offer on StubHub.
